Origin of Women's Equality Day

At the behest of Representative Bella Abzug (D-NY) in 1971 and passed in 1973, the U.S. Congress
designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day, to commemorate the date on which the Nineteenth
Amendment was certified. It’s a day on which we celebrate the importance of the women’s suffrage
movement and the work to secure and expand equal rights today. This event most often includes a
seminar, film or panel discussion on a current issue of importance to women and is celebrated on or
close to August 26 th . Last year’s panel was focused on Culturally Responsive Teaching: defined and
defended.
